Orange Chicken

This is a dish known for its marvelous and utter deliciousness. Orange chicken really is a bit sour as well as it is sweet and salty. It contains orange zest in the sauce. This chicken dish really has a strong orange flavor, sweetness, and saltiness. In addition, you can say this dish knows how to bring heat. This is because it has a bit of heat from the red pepper flakes as well.

orange chicken is one of the most creative dishes in the past years. In most countries of the western hemisphere, the names orange chicken, orange peel chicken, orange-flavored chicken, and tangerine chicken are typically the most used names for this particularly iconic dish.

It does taste good. But also it is not that much unhealthier than the regular old white meat chicken. Dark meat is undeniably more flavorful than white meat. And of course, the chicken in our orange chicken is going to have a more intense chicken flavor. That is when compared with the regular old standard white breast chicken nuggets.

Below I have listed the ingredients and I have written down the process of how to make the perfect Orange Chicken step by step for you.

So let’s get started!

First of all, read the ingredient list below and see if you have everything you need for the dish.

Ingredients for Orange Chicken:

For the seasoning;

  • 1 egg
  • 1 teaspoon of white pepper
  • 2 chicken breasts
  • 1 and a half teaspoon of salt

For the coating;

  • Half a cup of corn starch
  • ¼ of a cup of flour

For the sauce;

  • 1 tablespoon of oil
  • 2 tablespoons of garlic paste (or chopped, whichever way you prefer)
  • 1 tablespoon of ginger
  • ½ teaspoon of chili flakes
  • 1 tablespoon of rice wine
  • 1 and a half tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 5 tablespoons of vinegar
  • 1 and a half tablespoons of water
  • 3 and a half tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch slurry

You will also need the following equipment as well:

  • Two bowls
  • A strainer
  • Oil (for deep frying)
  • A regular-sized frying pan
  • A deep frying pan
  • Paper towels
  • A flat wooden spoon

Woah! That is a long ingredient list. But then again you must have these above-mentioned ingredients. You will cook the best orange chicken you have ever tasted!

I have written the ingredients down separately for each section of cooking. In the recipe that will indicate sections such as making the brine, making the sauce, and so on.

This is done for your convenience.

Process to Orange Chicken:

Steps to Orange Chicken:

Step 1:

Get a bowl that is clean and dry.

Step 2:

Take your egg, 1 teaspoon of white pepper, and your 1 and a half teaspoon of salt and put all of that in the above-mentioned bowl.

Step 3:

Take a fork and mix all of the above mentioned in the bowl.

Step 4:

Take the chicken breasts and cut them into cubes or, cube them.

Step 5:

Put the cubed chicken in the bowl with the egg and condiment mixture.

Step 6:

Take a pair of tongs or simply use your hands to cover the chicken cubes with the mixture.

Step 7:

Take half a cup of cornstarch and the ¼ of a cup of flour and put that in a separate bowl. And take a fork and mix that well. Then take the chicken pieces. Coat them well. Set it aside.

Step 8:

Put your frying oil into a pan that is deep enough. Then put that over the stove or the hotplate and bring the heat up. Keep an eye on the heat. This is because you do not want the oil to be too hot. If so, that will result in the chicken getting overcooked or even burnt on the outside. But it will not be cooked on the inside at all.

Step 9:

And if the oil is not hot enough that will simply not cook the chicken the desired way and too much of the oil will seep through to the insides of the meat.

Step 10:

Make sure the oil is all heated up. Then let us move onto the next step in the process.

Step 11:

Now take each piece. Then gently place it in the oil. Please be careful not to splatter any hot oil on yourself while doing so.

Step 12:

Make sure to not overcrowd the pan. As overcrowding will decrease the heat of the oil. In addition, the chicken will not cook evenly.

Be patient.

Step 13:

Take a pair of tongs and turn the pieces in the pan as necessary.

Step 14:

Now for the sauce. Grab the following ingredients from the ingredient list above. Then mix it all in a frying pan. The stove should have a medium-high flame. Do as instructed below.

Take your 1 tablespoon of oil, 2 tablespoons of garlic paste (or chopped, whichever way you prefer), 1 tablespoon of ginger, and the ½ teaspoon of chili flakes and sautee these for about 30 seconds.

Now add the following and mix well for another 2 to 3 minutes.

  • 1 tablespoon of rice wine
  • 1 and a half tablespoons of soy sauce
  • 5 tablespoons of vinegar
  • 1 and a half tablespoons of water
  • 3 and a half tablespoons of sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of orange zest
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch slurry

How to make a cornstarch slurry; in a nutshell, all you need to do is get a small mixing bowl or even a cup will do the trick. Now put the cornstarch into that said cup. Then put in a tablespoon of water and mix it well. You are done when what is in the cup resembles a slurry-like consistency. Make sure to not leave any lumps or pockets of cornstarch left behind. That is how you make a cornstarch slurry quickly.

Step 15:

Take the fried chicken pieces and put them all on the pan with the sauce and take the wooden spoon and coat them with the sauce evenly over a medium flame.

Step 16:

Plate the orange chicken.

Side dishes for Orange Chicken could include mashed potatoes, baked potatoes, vegetables, dessert, and something to drink according to your preference. Broccoli, or Green beans, or a side salad would do nicely as well. Include things that you like and make sure to add color to your meal as you enjoy it better when it appeals to your eyes as well as your taste buds.

Some nice long beans cooked with garlic and shallots and a nice big dab of butter will go well with this as a side dish. Or even maybe a light soup such as Miso would do you good with this dish.

Now comes the best part. Sit back, relax and enjoy your Orange Chicken!
